Sonoma Valley & Surrounding Wine Country
The climate of Sonoma Valley strikes a perfect balance for growing wine grapes of exceptional quality. During the day, sun warms the vineyards and nurtures growth. At night, the cooling influence of the Pacific Ocean through the Petaluma Gap and San Pablo Bay allow the grapes to assimilate the day’s heat for optimal ripening and fruit development.
The cooler regions of Sonoma Valley, which locally is known as the Valley of the Moon, produce award-winning Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and other grape varieties that thrive with less heat. Up valley, where the ocean’s influence is less prevalent, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Zinfandel and other grapes that prefer more warmth have been planted with great success.
The town of Sonoma, located in the heart of the valley, is rich with history. In 1823,decades before California achieved statehood, Franciscan padres planted winegrapes near what is now Sonoma’s downtown plaza. The northernmost mission of California also was built here and draws tourists from around the world. Famous barracks and other historical sites mingle with great restaurants, tasting rooms, bookstores and coffee shops.
